While kids head back to school this week, I often feel like it's also a new start for us adults! Here are three tips to remain calm and focused as the 'back to work' rush sets in:
1) Tune out Distractions
The average knowledge worker loses 2.2 hours of productivity a day. The reason: DIGITAL DISTRACTIONS. Whether it's text messages, phone calls, emails, or some news alert, being distracted keeps you from focusing and retaining a train of thought. Turning off the sound or notifications on your phone for a specific period of time will allow you to concentrate and fix your attention on the tasks at hand.
2) Focus on Your 3 Most Importants
Developed by efficiency expert Ivy Lee, the process of determining and then only working on your top 3 tasks will make you more efficient and focused. Start your day with the job that you least want to do and work your way through you the rest of your most importants. Often, we do the things that we most enjoy and procrastinate on the tasks that would bring us greater success.
3) Be Present by Taking a Deep Breathe
Most of us live (in our minds), either in the past or the future, totally ignoring the present moment. However, the only thing that you can influence is this moment. By taking a deep breath and bringing your attention to it (feel it move into your lungs and pay attention to your exhale), you take yourself out of your mind allowing your mind and body to calm, if only for a couple of moments. Bringing your awareness to the present is a powerful way to calm your nervous system and find a place of stillness where all inspiration and great ideas arise.
